Why we do, what we do
In India’s evolving educational landscape, children from low-income communities face profound barriers to long-term academic and economic success. Standard classrooms often prioritize rote learning over actual understanding, leaving
millions of student operations vulnerable to academic regression.
While national enrollment rates are higher than ever, severe gaps in foundational learning,
student retention, and structural classroom support continue to impact children from vulnerable communities:
The Foundational Literacy Gap: Even as tracking under the national NIPUN Bharat Mission scales up, 51.2% of Grade 5 students in rural government schools still cannot fluently read a standard Grade 2 textbook.
The Arithmetic Hurdle: More than two-thirds of Grade 5 children nationwide (69.3%) are unable to solve a basic 3-digit by 1-digit numerical division problem—a mathematical milestone expected by Grade 3 or 4.
The Cumulative Dropout Spike: While annual upper-primary dropout averages have dropped to about 3.5%, socio-cultural and economic barriers cause a massive crisis as children grow older, leaving nearly 40% of adolescent
girls dropping out of education before reaching Class 10.
The Classroom Infrastructure Strain: Systemic resource distribution remains a hurdle; 52.1% of small government primary schools across the country face shrinking student-to-school margins, resulting in two-thirds
of Grade 1 and Grade 2 classrooms being forced into challenging multi-grade teaching spaces.
